Will Smith spoke about his notorious Oscar night for the first time in his first significant TV interview following his on-stage smack of Chris Rock in March.
On Monday night’s episode of The Daily Show, Smith revealed how Rock’s joke about his wife’s hair caused him to “just lose it.”
He began by stating that his feelings did not excuse his actions before noting, “That was a wrath that had been repressed for a tremendously long time.”
“You simply never know what someone is going through, I suppose I should say. That evening, I was going through something. Similar to how they say, “Hurt people hurt people,””
Learning to forgive himself “for being human,” according to Smith, has been his hardest hardship over the past eight months.
He stated, “I had to come to terms with the fact that I’m an imperfect human and that I still have a chance to go out into the world and make a contribution in a way that satisfies my heart and perhaps helps others.
Smith appeared on the programme to promote the recent historical drama Emancipation, in which he plays a runaway slave.
Even though the Smith slap continues to dominate the Hollywood conversation, the movie’s director, Antoine Fuqua, has backed Apple’s choice to release Emancipation this December on numerous occasions.
This week, during an appearance on a morning talk programme, Smith said he would comprehend if viewers decided not to see the movie as a form of protest against his actions.
Smith told reporter Kevin McCarthy on Good Day DC, “I would respect it and give them their space to not be ready.
“My team is my biggest worry. My sincere goal is that my actions don’t harm my team, as the members of this team have produced some of their best work during their whole lives. That’s what I’m aiming towards right now.”
Smith elaborated on how he let people down by telling a tale about his 9-year-old nephew’s reaction to seeing the slap on television.
“In order to see his Uncle Will, he had remained up late. He’s on my lap and holding the Oscar while we sit in my kitchen. And he just asks, “Why did you strike that man, Uncle Will?”” Smith spoke after pausing to blot his eyes.
Smith’s upbeat attitude contributed to some of his fan base’s appeal.
He admitted to creating that image last year on NPR’s Fresh Air to mask his childhood trauma, which included witnessing his father abuse his mother when he was just 9 years old.
Smith’s participation on the Comedy Central programme, which receives an average of 370,000 viewers per week, was one of his first public appearances since the March 27 Oscars. It was also one of his first significant televised interviews.
The actor’s portrayal of King Richard earned him his first Academy Award for finest actor, but the infamous smack and its consequences overshadowed his achievement.
Smith later left the Academy, which expelled him from all of its functions for the following ten years.
Rock eventually received an apology from Smith in a video that was shared on social media in July, but at the time, Rock said he wasn’t ready to talk about the incident.
