When they received a uterine cancer diagnosis, two young American women’s dreams of becoming parents were dashed, namely Rugieyatu Bhonopha and Jenny Mitchell. According to NBC News, they had to have hysterectomies or the partial or whole removal of the uterus.
After research tying hair-straightening products to an increased risk of uterine cancer surfaced last month, four women, including Bhonopha and Mitchell, sued L’Oréal and others.
Both of them utilized items to straighten their hair because they felt compelled to do so by social and professional norms.
According to the plaintiffs, there were no cautions included with the items, thus they were unaware of any potential risks.
According to Bhonopha, who spoke to NBC, “You had no idea that these items were hazardous, you didn’t know that any of these harmful compounds were in it.” “Obviously, if you knew, you wouldn’t have used them.”
Mitchell, who is only 28 years old, worries about her cancer coming back. She told NBC that having uterine cancer increases your risk of developing breast or colon cancer. “Many individuals are unaware of that.
Breast cancer was discovered in 2017 and uterine cancer in 2021 in 49-year-old Bernadette Gordon.
She admitted to using chemical relaxants between 1983 and 2015 to NBC.
After enduring rigorous cancer treatments, she remarked, “It’s been horrible for me.

L’Oréal however, claimed the complaints lacked validity.

In the US, uterine cancer is very uncommon, but Black women are experiencing an increase in occurrences.
The research that was published in October provided the first epidemiological proof of a connection between straightening products and uterine cancer.
The National Institute of Environmental Health Safety (NIEHS) has stated, “We predicted that 1.64% of women who never used hair straighteners would go on to get uterine cancer by the age of 70, but for frequent users, that risk increases up to 4.05%.”
